Food Intolerance Testing

" Less than 2% of the population suffer with food allergies, however, up to 45% of the population is estimated to suffer from some form of food intolerance."

Cambridge Nutritional Sciences.

It has long been known that consumption of certain foods can have a profound effect on our physical and pyschological well-being. This is even more prevelant in todays' world with the huge consumption of processed foods.

Symptoms of intolerance can occur sometime after the food has been eaten and it can be difficult to identify the food or foods which caused the symptoms. Some food related symptoms may be caused from enzyme deficiency or chemical sensitivity, while in others an autoimmune response may be involved.

The causes of food intolerances are not widely understood. Possible causes may be; inadequate digestion, dysbiosis, candidiasis, parasites, intestinal infections, a poorly balanced diet, alcohol or the effects of drugs and medications.

Problems or symptoms may be seen as:

  • Respiratory - rhinitis, sinusitis and asthma
  • Musculoskeletal - arthritis, joint pains, aching muscles and weakness
  • Gastrointestinal - vomiting, bloating, cramping, excessive wind, water retention, nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, weight control and colic
  • Central Nervous System - migraine, headache, impaired concentration, mood changes, depression, fatigue and hyperactivity
  • Dermatological - urticaria, eczema, itchy skin and other rashes

Symptoms can appear up to three days after eating the "offending" food and can last for weeks. This is why it is so difficult to identify food intolerances by keeping food diaries as we are often unable to pinpoint the cause.
